When I first got a digital copy of INTENSE RESTRAINT, I initially thought the "restraint" was referring to feelings of a homoerotic/latent homosexual nature. As the author writes in the dedication to the book: "...dedicated to guys who feel a tiny bit nervous when alone with one other guy."
This element of the book as well as the bondage elements of the book were handled with a great amount of skill, precision and integrity. Anyone who cannot tell the difference between good and bad writing should sit down for a certain amount of time, with a copy of FIFTY SHADES OF GREY (erotic romance with some BDSM spice thrown in, so that it's "hardcore" to people who aren't exposed to sophisticated erotic fiction, and/or original non-mass-market published genre fiction) and INTENSE RESTRAINT.
In FIFTY SHADES, Ana (the female protagonist) goes "Holy Crap" at least every other page (sometimes more than once per page). In INTENSE RESTRAINT, Steven says "Holy Crap" on a much less frequent basis. I've seen some fans of FIFTY SHADES say that the repetition is a sign of "good writing" because the writer is building character. For people who read a lot and in a wide variety of genres, repetition is a sign of "laziness" and the writer is not doing much to really fire up the reader's imagination (in a way that is particularly inspiring, unique, or challenging).
At its core, FIFTY SHADES is a fairytale romance. The backbone of the story is about the girl finding her Prince Charming.
INTENSE RESTRAINT is a lot more realistic, layered, subtle, complex, and i-n-t-e-r-e-s-t-i-n-g. I've had a longtime interest in BDSM elements in both life and fiction. By far, INTENSE RESTRAINT was a lot more exciting and engaging than the fluff that fills the pages of FIFTY SHADES.
I'd recommend INTENSE RESTRAINT to anyone who's interested in the concept of Stockholm Syndrome, where the victim develops feelings of codependency and/or affection for their captors. Modern mass market literature is akin to fast food -- it must be easy to digest and easy to market to a specific target audience (such as "YA paranormal romance," for instance). This means that there'll be less and less mainstream works that are truly original or that give us fresh perspectives on life, sexuality, and everything else.
Good stories still exist -- stories that don't require media hype and "sensationalism" to become a thing of substance. I always enjoy a nice diversion from the stereotypical "fairytale" concept in mainstream romances, where a man must be a "masculine man" and a female must be a "feminine female" in order for the female to feel complete. INTENSE RESTRAINT is something that is contemporary, and above all, *real*.
One of my favorite paragraphs in INTENSE RESTRAINT is as follows:
"I was silent for a moment. He pulled his keys out of his own pajama pocket and locked me in. Then he stared at me with a wistful expression until I said good night to him. Something about this little exchange tugged at my heart, and as I rolled over to go to sleep, I felt confused about the growing affection I felt for him. Somehow I was accepting his weird "quirks" like wanting to tie me up, wanting to carry me, wanting to spar with me and even wanting to keep me a prisoner. I liked him despite all of that. I could not believe the way I felt. It made no sense."
How the feelings were captured does make perfect sense, in a "seeking order out of chaos" way.
Much better for both the mind and soul (on a personal as well as social/societal level), than to constantly praise and celebrate the over-consumption of sugary fluff, IMHO.

Intense Restraint Anonymous 9781477514450 Books Reviews
Holy boring. Wow. Cold characters. Cold writing and not much else of anything at all, especially plot. No sex, no sense. Not for me.
Every once in a while a news story will surface about a person who was abducted and held against their will for several months, sometimes years. What I always find fascinating about these stories is the strange codependent relationship that develops between the victim and their captor. In interviews following the hostage's escape, they sometimes admit to feelings of empathy, even affinity for their abductor, sometimes to the point of defending them. This phenomenon, commonly referred to as the Stockholm syndrome, has always eluded me. I could never understand how someone, constantly abused and tormented by another person--whether it be an abused spouse or a bullied sibling or even a complete stranger--could feel anything but resent and deep-seeded hatred for that person. Well, now I know.
The author of Intense Restraint accomplishes a rare feat; he not only carves out a suspenseful story with rich, complex characters, but he gives us a peek inside the confounding dynamic that develops between hostage and captor. Like a battered wife, the victim and main protagonist, Steven, alternates between feelings of disgust and revulsion for his ambivalently homosexual captor, Jeremy, to feelings of respect, sympathy, even love.
For example, while bound to a chair by his wrists and ankles, an eerily introspective Steven admits to these feelings about, Jeremy, his abductor
"I enjoyed being in the kitchen with him despite my predicament. Being with a `buddy' felt better than being alone in the basement with only paperback books to keep me company....I knew he [Jeremy] cared about me--my presence was important to him in some way. I knew we could confide in each other. Somehow I couldn't seem to help accepting him as a companion, sharing my thoughts with him and listening to his thoughts. I felt a growing emotional bond between us, and that bond troubled me more than being tied up. I could endure being tied to a chair. That position was a little scary and uncomfortable, but it was bearable."
This type of introspection is not only engaging and compelling; it's maddeningly thought provoking. At times, I felt sympathy for Steven and his strangely unfortunate predicament, while other times I felt frustration, almost annoyance with his calm, indifferent demeanor. In fact, there were a couple points in the novel where I was basically screaming at him to take a little initiative and get the hell out of there. Lord knows Jeremy gave him plenty of opportunities to do just that. In one of their bizarre yet compulsively readable "work-out" scenes in the basement, Steven, completely unbound, hands a very heavy iron dumbbell to Jeremy who is lying flat on his back on top of a work-out bench, completely vulnerable. If Steven wants to escape, all he has to do is drive that weight right in between Jeremy's eyeballs. But, he doesn't do it. Why? Because he doesn't "have the heart" to do it, he explains. At first, I was outraged by this pathetic admittance. But then, I began to wonder, would I, in a similar situation, be capable of smashing another man's face with a dumbbell? If he was keeping me locked up in a cage, then YES, I'd like to think so. But then again, perhaps not. Perhaps, in a similar situation, I'd be so overcome with shock and confusion that I'd be just as unwilling or unable to escape. But does this mean I'd develop compassion for my captor? I wouldn't think so, but according to the FBI's Hostage Barricade Database, roughly 27% of hostage victims show evidence of Stockholm Syndrome. That's almost one in three. So, it's a lot more prevalent than you would think.
It's pondering like this that makes this story so damn interesting. The story forces the reader to think about things they wouldn't normally contemplate; to feel things they wouldn't normally explore. Because of this, it's definitely not your run-of-the-mill, "Thriller" genre, kidnapper story. It's so much more. Dark, complex, and flawlessly well written, Intense Restraint will not only thrill, frighten, and stimulate your imagination, it will tease, taunt, and question your resolve. I recommend it to anyone looking for a break from today's genre-driven, mass appeal market. I guarantee it's not like anything else you'll pick up at Barnes & Noble.
An interesting story about a straight-male captive who begins to feel attracted to his straight-male captor, and vice versa. At times quite suspenseful -- will the captive survive, will he escape, will he get raped, what is going to happen next? There are elements of bondage in the story, but it is not primarily about BDSM or sex, more of a psychological journey -- if you are looking for porn move along. Homoerotic? Sure, but why should we have to classify these things. A guy can love somebody without wanting to have sex with him. The development of the Stockholm Syndrome is the only real plot line in this story, so you definitely won't lose track of what is happening or who the characters are. The writing is clear and detailed. Sometimes the conversational dialogue sounds more like a narration summary, which is why I give it four stars.
